Government considering WTO action against China: Agriculture Minister

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud has told Sky News the federal government is considering its options with respect to action against China at the WTO over recent trade disputes on beef, barley, and wine.

Beijing has recently announced it is launching an investigation into whether Australia dumped wines at lower prices on the Chinese market which would consequently hurt the prospects of local producers.

It comes after months of trade disputes which saw China put a close to 80 per cent tariff on Australian barley as well as suspending imports from four large beef abattoirs.

Mr Littleproud said the government has never taken a trade dispute with China to the World Trade Organisation – which arbitrates trade disagreements and violations – but has taken that route with other trade partners.

"We’ll consider our options with respect to the WTO and that’s the same with wine," he said.

“We need to look at the facts in front of us on each of the commodities each of the circumstances laid in front of us."
